Every once in a while, I get to document a wedding day that strips away all the noise, the timelines, and the production, leaving nothing but two people, a stunning view, and a lifetime commitment. Amanda and Wes’ intimate elopement at Prospector Campground in Dillon, Colorado was exactly that.
Amanda actually found me online, and from our very first chat, I knew their day was going to be something incredibly special. Last year, they took a trip to Colorado and completely fell in love with the rugged scenery. When it came time to plan their wedding, they decided to ditch the traditional route and head back to the mountains to elope—just the two of them. One of the absolute best things about getting married in Colorado is that you can legally self-solemnize, meaning you don’t need an officiant or witnesses to make it official. You just need your person, a marriage license, and a pen.
When May rolled around, the end-of-spring mountain air was crisp and perfect. Wes looked sharp in a deep green suit that perfectly complemented the alpine scenery, and Amanda was stunning in a lacy, flowy gown that practically begged to be caught in the mountain breeze. Armed with a gorgeous bouquet by Sunnyside Floral, LLC, they hit the trail.
Prospector Campground absolutely checked every single box on their wishlist. They wanted an epic, sweeping mountain backdrop without a crowd, and that is exactly what we found. The absolute portrait win of the day happened as the sun started to dip behind the peaks. We caught the most breathtaking golden hour glow that illuminated the reservoir and the mountains behind them. It was calm, quiet, and completely serene.
What I loved most about Amanda and Wes is just how genuinely them they were throughout the entire afternoon. They were so appreciative, so grounded, and so entirely present with one another. After they exchanged their vows, we celebrated the only way you should after a mountain hike: by cutting a mini wedding cake right there on the trail and popping a bottle of prosecco!
As we were wrapping up, they told me they already plan to bring their kids back to this exact spot one day to show them where their story officially began. Being trusted to document a moment that intimate is a massive privilege, and I went home with a memory card full of some of my favorite mountain portraits to date.
Amanda and Wes, cheers to your greatest adventure yet!
Enjoy a look into this beautiful, private Colorado elopement.
