I recently got to hang out with a total powerhouse of a family who traveled all the way from Texas to catch some mountain air near Copper Mountain. We had originally planned for a different spot, but Colorado decided to show off with a very bright, blue-bird sunny day.
Since harsh overhead sun isn’t always the “best friend” for photos, we did a quick pivot over to Officer’s Gulch.
If you haven’t been, Officer’s Gulch is such a mood. It’s tucked right between Frisco and Copper, offering all those rugged mountain textures—think deep green pines, big granite rocks, and a quiet shoreline—that look incredible even when the sun is out in full force. It ended up being the perfect “plan B” for this crew.
High Energy & Quick Wins
Because this was a mini session, we hit the ground running. The kids showed up with so much energy (honestly, the best kind of chaos!), and we spent our 30 minutes just playing and exploring.
I’m a big believer that family photos shouldn’t feel like a chore, especially when you’re on vacation. We skipped the stiff, “sit still” posing and instead leaned into the movement. We chased the light, hopped over some rocks, and captured those genuine, mid-laugh smiles that actually look like them.
From the City to the High Country
Whether I’m shooting a lifestyle session back home in Denver or heading up to the Mountain Towns for a quick update like this one, my favorite part is always the same: capturing the “vibe” of your family exactly as you are in this moment.
